It was a great fun wedding in beautiful Northern NSW sunshine. I always knew I was going to have a great time as their wedding photographer. I also knew the party was set to be huge when I saw these two guests rocking fully wild hair. Love it.

It’s been a few weeks since I was the wedding photographer for Sam and Andy’s marriage in a gorgeous day over looking Byron Bay. They are back from honeymoon so it’s time to show off a few more photos from their wedding. Sam and Andy’s ceremony was preformed by The Champagne Celebrant in a private farm in the Byron Bay hinterland. Their reception was held at the Summerhouse and was co-ordinated by Creative Weddings. They cruised in style in a fabulous Kombi van from the Dub Driver.
Great start to the day. Just found out that a photo I took at Natalie and Jonathan’s wedding at Peppers at Salt in Kingscliff has been featured in a Sydney newspaper today.
Another cool coincidence is that the wedding was on 11-11-11 and the photo appeared on page 111 of the newspaper.
Great place for a wedding. Great place to be the wedding photographer.
I’ve had some dramas over the past few weeks; good dramas. I’ve just redone my website. Some blog pictures and posts got messed up so some old links may not work, but it’s back and looking classy.
I liked the old website and blog, but it had a major problem – Microsoft changed some things and it didn’t work properly with new versions of Internet Explorer – and therefore had to be changed. All should be good now.

This is from Taryn and Shane’s beautiful beach wedding that was held last year on Wategoes Beach at Byron.

Had some fun with this image. Although I took the photo with a professional lens on a professional camera, I dropped the photograph into my iPhone for a quick bit of processing with a cheap app before sending it back to my computer for finishing in Photoshop. Not something I normally would do, but we all know photos are meant to be fun.
Being a Byron Bay wedding photographer is what I do. At a guess I would say a good 80% of the weddings I photograph are in Byron. Almost all of those are people who come here from outside the Northern Rivers area. Ballina people get married in Ballina, Lismore people have their weddings in Lismore, Yamba brides stick to Yamba, Casino and Kyogle couples tend to stick to the country and don’t go for beach weddings.
It was therefore refreshing to photograph local couple Alexandra and Dave on home turf at Byron Bay.
I love stories of how couples met, got together and were engaged. Alexandra and Dave’s meeting was super cool because of how simple it was. Alexandra is a hairdresser at Hair Machine and Beauty in Lismore. Dave needed a haircut. Snap. Game over. It’s not the big decisions that are life changing. It’s the little ones. Dave could have gone anywhere for that haircut. Instead of a trim from a sweaty old barber, he met his wife.
Fast forward to their wedding. The lead up to Alexandra and Dave’s wedding was wet. Torrential rain one day, soaking rain the next. The lawn at the Byron at Byron where they had planned to have their ceremony was pretty wet but that didn’t matter. The resort staff cleared the restaurant and made a great space for the ceremony. The rain stayed away for their wedding and it was a perfect Byron Bay afternoon with great people having loads of fun.
Alexandra pulled her crew together to do hair and make-up. Her Mum did an astonishing job on flowers and bridesmaids dresses. It was simply a lovely, loving wedding.

But I missed something. The bridal party were entering the reception from one side of the room, I entered from the other side. In doing that I missed out on meeting Terri, Bindi and Bob Irwin. Probably a good thing though. I’d be likely to have embarrassed myself by showing them the scar I have from when I was attacked by a stingray.
I’ve been a wedding photographer for almost 20 years. When I started photographing weddings the mark of a good photographer was his trusty Hasselblad medium format camera. The rise of 35mm photojournalistic style wedding photography was being accused of dumbing down wedding photography. Some photographers kept the negatives, others gave them to the brides. There was an old guard and a new school of wedding photographers.
Right now there are more huge changes happening in the wedding photography game. New photographers are flooding the market, shooting weddings at very cheap prices, mostly turning out bad work made pretty with purchased Photoshop tricks called actions. They’ll be around just as long as it takes to break a camera. They’re uninsured and don’t have enough money to buy a new camera. Pity the bride who has them hired the week after that camera breaks.
But some of this new breed have good ideas. I call them ‘The Cool Club’ and keep an idea on what they are up to. Not to keep up with them, but to stay ahead of them.
So this week I have implemented two changes. The first has been a long time coming. A camera upgrade. Canon finally launched their new 5D model, the Mark 3. I bought one yesterday and will buy a second one next week. They’ll be my wedding photography workhorses from now on. Spent last night doing something I’ve never done before with a new camera. I read the manual from cover to cover. Today I am putting it through its paces. So far I am loving the quality of images from this camera.
The other change I have made is also technology related. As I mentioned earlier I’ve seen wedding photography changed from being medium format film based, to 35mm film, to digital with images delivered on CD, then DVD. Now the DVD drive is starting to disappear from computers. As a result I am moving over to a combination of wedding photo image delivery that uses USB sticks and online downloads.
Here’s a photo of my nice shiny USB stick boxes. Of course it doesn’t matter how pretty the box is, nothing beats your wedding photos published in a quality custom made album.
I’m running a bit (a lot?) behind in my blogging so I thought I should rectify that situation and bring you some images from the last wedding I photographed last year. The fabulous wedding of Laura and Andrew.
On a day of blazing sunshine and great laughs, they had their ceremony at the Catholic Cathedral in Lismore and their reception at the Ballina Beach Resort. Sarah Jane from Lady Bella was responsible for hair and makeup, with transport by Byron Bay Limousines.
