Gorgeous, Sunny Byron Bay Wedding Photography

It’s been a few weeks since I was the wedding photographer for Sam and Andy’s marriage in a gorgeous day over looking Byron Bay. They are back from honeymoon so it’s time to show off a few more photos from their wedding. Sam and Andy’s ceremony was preformed by The Champagne Celebrant in a private farm in the Byron Bay hinterland. Their reception was held at the Summerhouse and was co-ordinated by Creative Weddings. They cruised in style in a fabulous Kombi van from the Dub Driver.

Kingscliff Wedding Photography Featured in Sydney Newspaper

Great start to the day. Just found out that a photo I took at Natalie and Jonathan’s wedding at Peppers at Salt in Kingscliff has been featured in a Sydney newspaper today.

Another cool coincidence is that the wedding was on 11-11-11 and the photo appeared on page 111 of the newspaper.

Great place for a wedding. Great place to be the wedding photographer.Kingscliff Wedding Photographer

New Website Launched, Finally

I’ve had some dramas over the past few weeks; good dramas. I’ve just redone my website. Some blog pictures and posts got messed up so some old links may not work, but it’s back and looking classy.

I liked the old website and blog, but it had a major problem – Microsoft changed some things and it didn’t work properly with new versions of Internet Explorer – and therefore had to be changed. All should be good now.

Here’s a quick photo from a recent beach wedding at Wategoes in Byron Bay.

Even More Byron Bay Beach Wedding Photography

Just realised the guys from Byron Wedding Visual have another wedding I photographed featured on their website.

This is from Taryn and Shane’s beautiful beach wedding that was held last year on Wategoes Beach at Byron.

Taryn + Shane from Byron Wedding Visual on Vimeo.

Had some fun with this image. Although I took the photo with a professional lens on a professional camera, I dropped the photograph into my iPhone for a quick bit of processing with a cheap app before sending it back to my computer for finishing in Photoshop. Not something I normally would do, but we all know photos are meant to be fun.

More Byron Bay Wedding Photography Goodness from the Byron at Byron Resort

Here’s something cool. A sneak peek at Alexandra and Dave’s Byron Bay wedding video from the Byron at Byron Resort.

Alexandra + David from Byron Wedding Visual on Vimeo.

See if you can spot me in the background. When a wedding photographer and videographer work together, it’s a dance as we move around each other trying to avoid getting in shots. Some videographers can do it, others can’t. The guys from Byron Wedding Visual definitely can do the dance of the wedding photographers.

Byron Bay Wedding Photography From The Byron at Byron

Being a Byron Bay wedding photographer is what I do. At a guess I would say a good 80% of the weddings I photograph are in Byron. Almost all of those are people who come here from outside the Northern Rivers area. Ballina people get married in Ballina, Lismore people have their weddings in Lismore, Yamba brides stick to Yamba, Casino and Kyogle couples tend to stick to the country and don’t go for beach weddings.

It was therefore refreshing to photograph local couple Alexandra and Dave on home turf at Byron Bay.

I love stories of how couples met, got together and were engaged. Alexandra and Dave’s meeting was super cool because of how simple it was. Alexandra is a hairdresser at Hair Machine and Beauty in Lismore. Dave needed a haircut. Snap. Game over. It’s not the big decisions that are life changing. It’s the little ones. Dave could have gone anywhere for that haircut. Instead of a trim from a sweaty old barber, he met his wife.

Fast forward to their wedding. The lead up to Alexandra and Dave’s wedding was wet. Torrential rain one day, soaking rain the next. The lawn at the Byron at Byron where they had planned to have their ceremony was pretty wet but that didn’t matter. The resort staff cleared the restaurant and made a great space for the ceremony. The rain stayed away for their wedding and it was a perfect Byron Bay afternoon with great people having loads of fun.

Alexandra pulled her crew together to do hair and make-up. Her Mum did an astonishing job on flowers and bridesmaids dresses. It was simply a lovely, loving wedding.

Here’s just a handful of their wedding photos. You can see a few more on my Facebook page here.

But I missed something. The bridal party were entering the reception from one side of the room, I entered from the other side. In doing that I missed out on meeting Terri, Bindi and Bob Irwin. Probably a good thing though. I’d be likely to have embarrassed myself by showing them the scar I have from when I was attacked by a stingray.

Wedding Photography. Changing For the Better

I’ve been a wedding photographer for almost 20 years. When I started photographing weddings the mark of a good photographer was his trusty Hasselblad medium format camera. The rise of 35mm photojournalistic style wedding photography was being accused of dumbing down wedding photography. Some photographers kept the negatives, others gave them to the brides. There was an old guard and a new school of wedding photographers.

Right now there are more huge changes happening in the wedding photography game. New photographers are flooding the market, shooting weddings at very cheap prices, mostly turning out bad work made pretty with purchased Photoshop tricks called actions. They’ll be around just as long as it takes to break a camera. They’re uninsured and don’t have enough money to buy a new camera. Pity the bride who has them hired the week after that camera breaks.

But some of this new breed have good ideas. I call them ‘The Cool Club’ and keep an idea on what they are up to. Not to keep up with them, but to stay ahead of them.

So this week I have implemented two changes. The first has been a long time coming. A camera upgrade. Canon finally launched their new 5D model, the Mark 3. I bought one yesterday and will buy a second one next week. They’ll be my wedding photography workhorses from now on. Spent last night doing something I’ve never done before with a new camera. I read the manual from cover to cover. Today I am putting it through its paces. So far I am loving the quality of images from this camera.

The other change I have made is also technology related. As I mentioned earlier I’ve seen wedding photography changed from being medium format film based, to 35mm film, to digital with images delivered on CD, then DVD. Now the DVD drive is starting to disappear from computers. As a result I am moving over to a combination of wedding photo image delivery that uses USB sticks and online downloads.

Here’s a photo of my nice shiny USB stick boxes. Of course it doesn’t matter how pretty the box is, nothing beats your wedding photos published in a quality custom made album.

How to Lose Weight and Get In Shape For Your Wedding – 5 Tips

It’s an issue that pretty much every bride fears and every wedding photographer faces. If not managed properly the fear results in a simple statement to the photographer on the wedding day, “Can you Photoshop out my back fat?”. The problem is that’s the wrong question. The bride should have asked the question months before, “How do I get rid of my back fat?”. The irony is, it’s pretty easy and I’m here to give you some tips.

1. When to start.
Easy answer, immediately. Ideally you’ll be starting at least 3 months before the wedding. Longer is better. Don’t worry about your dress, you can get it altered.

2. I hate running, gyms, sport, whatever. Find exercise you like.
If you hate running, then cool, don’t run. But you’re going to have to find some kind of exercise you do like. Try a bunch of stuff (swimming, walking, cross fit, bootcamp, kayaking) and keep going until you find something you like. Aerobic exercise isn’t really going to help you slim down that much. It will make you fell better though, you’ll be toned and tightened. Life in general will get easier.

3. Why exercise alone won’t cut fat
There are lots of people out there who are ‘skinny fat’, that is they are thin but unfit. There are also other people who are overweight but super fit. The difference is the thin / unfit person is probably eating a good diet, but not exercising. The overweight yet fit person is likely to be eating poorly while doing a lot of exercise. The problem is, both are unhealthy. A good diet and exercise are both required to be healthy. The surprising part if the exercise / food equation is the amount of exercise required to burn off a given amount of food. Everyone knows apples are good for you, but you’re going to have to run for over a kilometre to burn it off. Without changing your diet, you’ll need to do excessive amounts of exercise to burn off the food you eat.

4. Fat Doesn’t Make You Fat, Carbs Make You Fat
Fat is essential for your body to function and fat in your diet is not the culprit for making you gain weight. The predominant cause of weight gain are carbohydrates. Carbs can be complex or simple. The simple carbs are pretty much just various forms of sugar. They cause an insulin response and that leads to the body storing the sugar in fat cells. Carbs make you fat. These bad carbs are found in soft drinks, fruit, bread, pasta, potatoes, sauces, cereal, cakes, etc. Eliminate carbs from your diet and you’ll strip kilos off in no time. No calorie counting, no points, no shakes, no hassles. Just stop eating carbs. And drink water. Lots of it. About 30mls per kilo of body weight. That’s 2250mls per day for a 75kg woman.

5. Lift Weights, Heavy Ones
Girls are scared of lifting weights but they shouldn’t be. Big, bulky muscles are hard to grow. You will grow some muscle though – firm, fat burning muscle. You might even get yourself a set of Sarah Connor arms (see pic)

That’s it. Give yourself plenty of time. Get rid of carbs from your diet. Find exercise you like. Lift weights. Drink lots of water. Done, no back fat.

Time to Win Some Photography Awards. Why I Even Bother Trying to Play This Frustrating Game

It’s that time of year again where I sit back, look through all the work I have produced over the past year and try to select images to enter into photography awards.

It’s difficult and frustrating. I normally end up being super critical and kick myself that my work isn’t up to scratch – and then a pile of images similar to the ones I reject end up having everyone go bananas over, with numerous awards given to them. Ironically, stuff that I would have simply deleted because I don’t like it, invariably grabs the attention of judges. Bah.

The idea of awards is to showcase the depth of talent and skill of the photographer, so it annoys me when someone enters a bunch of very similar images that all do well. I love to see photographers who push the envelope and do a range of different things. It may be within the same category like weddings or landscape but I like to see individual photographers showing off all their skills rather than honing in on a niche.

Controversy reigns supreme as photographers work to the letter of the law regarding the rules, rather than the spirit of the competition. Photoshop skills become more important than photographic skills. Snide comments, bitchiness and anonymous posts on Twitter encourage, enliven and enrage. It’s a circus.

Do clients care? I doubt it.
Does it improve my work? Possibly.
Is it worth the time and expense? Maybe.

So why bother?

As a solo photographer I work in a bubble. I think my work is great. Entering competitions is my way to benchmark my work. See how it stacks up against the best of the best. So it’s time to select work for three competitions. The International Pano Awards, The NSW Professional Photography Awards and for me the big one is the APPAs (The Australian Professional Photography Awards).

This year I have got a shortlist to sort through consisting of landscapes, wedding photography, portraits, architectural photos and other commercial work. Time to take a big breath and jump in the deep end.
